Our hands-on review of the YOHAWJAN indoor grill for apartments and small kitchens. We cover the smokeless design, temperature control, size, cleaning, and what we cook on it most.

Finding a Grill That Works in a Small Kitchen

We live in an apartment with a small kitchen and no outdoor space. Grilling was something we missed, but most indoor grills are either too big for our counter or produce enough smoke to set off the fire alarm. We tested the YOHAWJAN Electric Indoor Grill for a few months and it has become one of our most-used kitchen items.

The Smokeless Claim

Let us get the big question out of the way. Is it actually smokeless? Mostly, yes. When you use it at medium temperatures with a bit of water in the drip tray, the smoke is minimal. We have never set off our smoke detector with it, and our kitchen is small enough that we would know.

At high heat with fattier meats like bacon or heavily marinated chicken, there is some visible smoke. But it is far less than a traditional grill pan on the stove. Opening a window handles it.

Size and Fit

The cooking surface is big enough for four burgers or a few chicken breasts at once, which is perfect for two people. The footprint is compact enough to sit on our counter next to the toaster without crowding things. When we are done, it stores upright in the cabinet.

Compared to something like a Weber indoor/outdoor grill or a Ninja Foodi, this takes up maybe half the counter space. If you have a tiny kitchen, that matters a lot.

Temperature Control

The adjustable temperature dial goes from low to high with markings that are easy to read. We usually cook at medium for chicken and vegetables, and crank it up for steak. It heats up fast, about 3-4 minutes to get to cooking temperature, thanks to the 1500W element.

One thing we appreciate is how evenly it heats. No major hot spots, so you do not end up with one side of your food burnt and the other side raw.

The Raclette Pans

This grill comes with three small raclette pans that slide underneath the grill surface. We were skeptical about these at first, but they are actually fun for melting cheese, warming sauces, or making little individual portions. We have used them for melting cheese over nachos while grilling peppers on top. It turns dinner into more of an experience, especially with guests.

Cleaning

The grill plate and griddle plate are both removable and non-stick. We hand wash them with warm soapy water and they clean up in a couple of minutes. The drip tray catches grease and is easy to empty.

The downside: The non-stick coating means you cannot use metal utensils on it. We use silicone tongs and a plastic spatula. Over time, if the coating wears down, you will need to be more careful about food sticking.

What We Cook on It Most

Honestly, we use it 3-4 times a week. Here is our regular rotation:

  • Chicken thighs - Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a bit of olive oil. Medium-high heat, about 6-7 minutes per side.
  • Vegetables - Zucchini, bell peppers, and onions are our go-to. They get great grill marks and cook in about 5 minutes.
  • Burgers - Regular beef patties cook perfectly at high heat. The drip tray catches the grease so cleanup is easy.
  • Quesadillas on the griddle plate - Swap to the flat griddle plate and you have a perfect quesadilla maker.

How It Compares to Bigger Options

If you have the counter space and budget, a Ninja Foodi or George Foreman XL will give you a larger cooking area and more features. But those run $100-200+ and take up serious real estate. For $44, the YOHAWJAN does 80% of what those bigger grills do at a fraction of the cost and size.

We also pair it with our Old Stone Round Pizza Stone in the oven for pizza nights. The grill handles the proteins and veggies while the pizza stone handles the dough. It is a good combo for apartment cooking where you are working with limited tools.

The Honest Downsides

  • The non-stick coating will degrade over time if you are not careful with utensils
  • At very high heat with fatty foods, there is some smoke (not truly "smokeless" in every scenario)
  • The temperature dial does not show exact degrees, just a low-to-high range
  • The power cord is a bit short, so you might need it near an outlet

Bottom Line

For $44, this is the best indoor grill we have found for small kitchens and apartments. It is compact, heats evenly, and produces way less smoke than cooking on the stovetop. We use ours multiple times a week and it has held up well after a few months of regular use. If you are in a small space and miss grilling, this is a solid way to get that back without spending a lot or filling your apartment with smoke.
