I grew up with a molcajete and I wanted one that did not need the two-week seasoning ritual. This granite one arrived ready after one rinse and a quick grind of rice to clear the dust.

It is heavy, which is the point. It does not walk across the counter while you work. Garlic turns to paste in seconds. Whole cumin and coriander grind finer than a spice grinder gets them. Guacamole made in here has a texture a fork cannot give you.

Be aware it weighs about ten pounds, so it lives on the counter, not in a cabinet. The inside is rough on purpose. Do not put it in the dishwasher, just rinse and dry.

A good gift for anyone who cooks. Ours is out most weekends.
